On this day in 1933 the 21st Amendment repealed the 18th Amendment Prohibiting the manufacture, sale and distribution of alcohol. It was the first Amendment in America’s history that had ever been repealed.
The goal of the prohibition of alcohol and drinking establishments was to lower crime, the government meant well. However, prohibition actually did the opposite as crime increased, and criminals like Al Capone gained more power, and wealth. Add to that the onset of the Great Depression and the clamor for all the lost jobs that prohibition caused and the great American experiment was doomed.
