Groundhog Day- Punxsutawney Phil, a mouth full, and household name in February. Who is this, might you ask, the Groundhog of course. The legend goes, if he sees his shadow that means another six weeks of winter. I find this tradition quite perplexing, as we know Spring does not begin until the end of March, so where would such a tradition come from.
According to groundhog.org, it came from Pennsylvania’s earliest settlers, who were German, they believed, “that the groundhog, resembling the European hedgehog, was a most intelligent and sensible animal and therefore decided that if the sun did appear on February 2nd, so wise an animal as the groundhog would see its shadow and hurry back into its underground home for another six weeks of winter”. Somehow the tradition stuck, and it is still something that we look forward to every February 2nd, even though we know winter ends in March. And really, it has taken on a life of its own, with the movie, “Groundhog Day” a website about the history and traditions, and Punxsutawney Phil even has his own Twitter account. Whether you are someone who watches and participates, or not, it is nice to see such a deep rooted, fun tradition still taking place!
