Happy Cinco de Mayo!!

Happy Cinco de Mayo! Did you realize that today is more than just a day to eat chips and salsa and drink beer? Although that too can be fun, May 5th actually has significance to the Mexican population. According to the history.com website it is, “a holiday that celebrates the date of the Mexican army’s 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War (1861 – 1867)”. It may or may not surprise you to know that while the United States celebrates the day pretty heavily, Mexico really does not. The NBC website states that, “recent Mexican immigrants are often surprised at what a huge thing Cinco de Mayo has become in the United States. They do celebrate in Mexico, but it is only a big deal in Puebla”.  The CNN website states that, “the best and most visited Cinco de Mayo festivals in the United States are held in Chicago, Denver, Portland, Oregon, and St. Paul, Minnesota”. I did find it a little surprising that some of the biggest celebrations happen so far north.

Whether you choose to celebrate the day or not, with all of the promotional material out there leading up to it, it most definitely makes you think about Mexican culture. I know I am craving Mexican food today, and will probably grab something from one of the many delicious restaurants in the area. If you are craving it too, here is a link to Yelp’s 10 best Mexican Restaurants in Modesto, CA! Enjoy!
